[ PINT manufacturing vol.2 ] Using natural materials

This is the second installment of PINT's thoughts on manufacturing.

(previous article)
vol.1 Making modern folk tools

The "modern folk tools" that PINT thinks and makes, which I introduced last time, were like this.
1) Tools that can be used every day and can be used for a long time in the current era
2) It is the user who thinks about things. Lifestyle professionals = us ordinary people
3) Made by skilled craftsmen

Last time, I mainly wrote about the way of thinking, but this time I would like to focus on manufacturing.
"About material"

All PINT products use natural materials as they are. Wood, bamboo, linen, plants, soil, iron, etc.

This did not start with making things with natural materials, but as a result of thinking from the perspective of making good things, we decided to use natural materials.

I just introduced
1) Tools that can be used every day and can be used for a long time in the current era
For that reason, I will list some points of tools that PINT wants to make.

—————————————————————
・Characteristics of materials are utilized as tools
・Can be used every day and can be used for a long time
・ Fun to use every time
・ Comfortable to look at and touch
—————————————————————

Thinking about it this way, I can think of materials that are "strong", "doesn't deteriorate", "rather grows while being used", and "changes well over time". Although it is related to the manufacturing method, we thought that natural materials would most satisfy this requirement. In particular, I think that the more you use it, the better it grows and the more it grows, which is a big advantage of natural materials.

I wanted to learn more about natural materials, so I consulted literature on folklore, visited production areas and listened to craftsmen's stories, and used them myself. .
Humans have lived and prospered for tens of thousands of years. For example, it is said that it was about 100 years ago that petroleum products such as plastic were born and began to be used in earnest. The development of science and technology, including petroleum products, has created new materials, creating new things and convenience. Adapting to population growth and the ever-growing economy and consumption, it has greatly changed the convenience of our lives. We can't do everything all at once, but this method is to continue to mass-produce and bring it to the market. It is also important to be able to produce and supply products stably without loss, to ensure uniform quality, and to suppress fluctuations.

Conversely, looking at natural materials, they do not fit well with the size and shape of the current market. There is loss, it is not stable, there are individual differences, and since it is a natural thing, it is impossible to have no blurring.
For example, it takes a very long time to cut and dry solid natural wood into products, and even after drying, there are many parts that cannot be used. If the product is finished with, for example, oil paint, it may warp at the store (under strong lighting or strong drying). Instead of a craftsman opening a store and selling directly to the user, various people and companies came to intervene in the distribution process. As a store that specializes in selling materials, there are risks in production delays, individual differences, and material products that are a little troublesome to explain and deal with, so I would like to avoid them if possible. Also, even if you sell online, the wood grain is different one by one. It is difficult to handle and sell these days.

That's true, but the natural material itself hasn't changed. There should be a lot of merits (of course there are also demerits) if you face and learn about it instead of distribution convenience. I think it would be a waste to have something disappear just because it is not compatible with the market or consumer behavior. PINT believes that by looking at the way things are made, letting people know how good things are, thinking about things that are used in today's lifestyles, and reviewing sales methods, we hope to be an opportunity for people to continue using our products.
Humans have made the most of trees and plants and lived with all kinds of natural materials. Even if the speed is different from that after the development of science and technology, we have steadily continued to live in this environment. It is not that natural materials or the lifestyles of the olden days are inferior, but because they are good materials to use, they have been used as tools for hundreds or even thousands of years, and have been updated over generations.
Nowadays, the way we live has changed greatly, and that is precisely why we believe that the potential of new natural materials will emerge.

Among natural materials, PINT selects materials that have been used in Japan for a long time. If we go back in history, of course there was no distribution like there is now, so there weren't many imported materials and imports. Even if the technology was introduced from the continent, it was transmitted along with the movement of people, and the materials and environment developed according to the land where they lived. Therefore, materials that can be harvested in areas where people live naturally have been used. It was due to those constraints, but in the end it also made sense. Materials made from climatic environments such as temperature and humidity are naturally less burdensome to use in the local area.

I think that the reason why it has been used without being eliminated is because of its merits and benefits. Japan is an island nation rich in mountains and trees. The use of wooden utensils and chopsticks, the preference for linen suitable for hot and humid climates, and the clean water must have a lot to do with dyeing. Since the climate and natural features of Japan do not change, we believe that the materials that have been used in this land for a long time are the best for making the tools of today's lifestyles in Japan.

For this reason, PINT uses natural materials that have been used in Japan for a long time.

Next time, I will introduce the manufacturing method of PINT.
