(Previous article planning overview・First: Knowing the material・Second: Thinking about the shape )
This time, it's "making shape".
Mr. Ogura, a woodturner from Nagiso, Nagano Prefecture, brought us a potter's wheel.
While Ms. Ogura actually makes the vessel, everyone touches it on the spot and thinks about the shape.
Just like designers and buyers actually do (I don't think there are that many people), everyone gives instructions for corrections and decides on the final sample.
It's an important day to decide the specifications of the product.
After reviewing and introducing myself so far, let's get started!
Set the prepared wood on the potter's wheel. It seems that it is a stone of the Kiso River. good stone.
Rotate it on a potter's wheel and grind it with a blade.
Cheers from everyone. It is carved in front of you and takes shape.
Check by touching whether it is in line with the image of actual use.
The point here was that it should be “easy to hold (carry) on your finger”.
In order to compare "a deep S-shaped curve" and "a little more sharpened one", we had two more patterns made.
It's hard to tell from the picture, but the 3 patterns are slightly different. From left,
1: 20mm width where the outer edge rises, shallow S-shape
2: 20mm width with raised outer edge, deep S shape
3: 25mm width with raised outer edge, deep S shape
Considering the balance between ease of holding and appearance,
3: 25mm width with raised outer edge, deep S shape
decided!
I always feel that you can't make a decision based on drawings alone, so the most important thing is to actually work together with the craftsmen in the same place and time.
The shape has become closer to a wooden plate, making it easier to imagine.
In the second half, the image of the shape has become more solid, and it is getting more and more exciting.
After many revisions, the shape was almost decided.
Easy to put on your finger, easy to lift, easy to place, and appearance when placed.
The level of satisfaction with the finished product can be seen in the expressions on everyone's faces.
The thin edges make it easy to hold on your fingers.
It can also be an accent to the appearance, and it seems to fit various dining tables and meals.
Easy to lift, easy to place on the dining table, and a shape that allows your fingers to fit under the rim. The appearance when placed is also beautifully finished.
Mr. Ogura also enjoyed this live feeling and made it.
Planned and produced by a large number of people, 10 people, by the living hands themselves.
Over time, everyone thought and talked about it as if it were their own child, and the eyes of the people living in it were tightly packed, making it a wonderful product unique to everyone's tools.
Thanks to Mr. Ogura, a craftsman who cooperated positively with all the participants (this is the second time), and who gives form to our image and hopes with his high skill and ability to communicate.
Thank you to all the participants, Mr. Ogura. Thank you for your wonderful planning and production!

From now on, Mr. Ogura will make the plate decided this time as the final sample.
The next round is scheduled for November 22nd.
After the unveiling of the finished plate and the delivery party, everyone will have breakfast with this plate together.
At first, we were planning to have breakfast together, but during the production of this time, it was so exciting that an unexpected special project was realized.
The details will be reported in the next report.
